Sunday Ohakwu, a senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State, has claimed that there are plans to arrest Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, a former transport minister and former governor of Rivers State.
Ohakwu said the move is intended to weaken the opposition as the country approaches the next general election.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Ohakwu said that the alleged plot is being coordinated by a top security official linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and could be executed at any moment.
He added that several meetings had recently taken place to find reasons for anti-graft agencies to act against Amaechi.
According to Ohakwu, a small committee was set up to search for grounds to prosecute Amaechi through agencies such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), or the Department of State Services (DSS).
Teams have reportedly been reviewing state records, accounts, and properties in Rivers, Lagos, and Abuja, as well as looking into Amaechi’s tenure as transport minister during the Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Ohakwu insisted that any attempt to intimidate Amaechi or distract the ADC from the presidential race would fail, saying that Nigerians will not accept what he described as a “witch-hunt” against the party or its candidate. Amaechi, who has been critical of the APC-led federal government, is pursuing the presidency under the ADC platform.
