ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike At UNIZIK Over Incomplete August Salary.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged non-payment of the full August 2026 salary to its members.

The union announced the industrial action on Monday, September 7, 2026, following a congress meeting where members resolved to withdraw their services in line with a standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson of the ASUU-UNIZIK branch, Innocent Nnubia, and the Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union said the university had failed to pay the complete August salary by September 7.

According to ASUU, its national resolution permits branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid beyond the third day of the following month.

“The ASUU-UNIZIK Branch, at its Congress held today, Monday, September 7, 2026, resolved to withdraw her services in compliance with the standing Resolution of ASUU National Executive Council on non-payment of salaries,” the statement said.

The union said the delay had become a recurring issue, noting that members had experienced the situation more than three times.

“This makes it more than three times that our members are having this ugly and frustrating experience,” it added.

ASUU said the immediate withdrawal would affect both academic and administrative services, with members directed to remain on strike until the outstanding August salaries were fully paid.

“The Congress resolution directs as follows that all members should immediately withdraw all academic and administrative services. The withdrawal of services shall subsist until the complete payment of August 2026 salary to all members,” the union stated.

The lecturers urged the university authorities and the Visitor to the institution, President Bola Tinubu, to urgently intervene by ensuring that the full August salaries were paid and that similar incidents did not recur.

“The sole reason for this action is the non-payment of the complete salary of August 2026,” the union said.

The indefinite strike is expected to affect academic and administrative activities at Nnamdi Azikiwe University until the salary dispute is resolved.
