Nigerian actors and filmmakers have shared emotional accounts of their efforts to save actor Chijioke Temidayo Nwokafor, popularly known as Cjay Nwoks, who died on Wednesday, September 30.
Actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday, who was scheduled to release a film featuring Cjay on the same day, tearfully announced his death while she was still at the hospital in Badore, Lagos, where the actor reportedly died.
Several of his colleagues have since taken to social media to recount their final interactions with the actor, saying he appeared well earlier in the day and that his sudden death came as a shock.
Actress Ruth Kadiri wrote: “If anyone had told me my day would end at the hospital I wouldn’t have believed. Farewell CJ.”
Actor Saheed Apanpa also revealed that he had spoken with Cjay earlier that day and that the actor had returned from the hospital saying he was fine.
“Hoping you will stand up and say, ‘Boss, when are we working?’ We spoke at 2am. You sent my sister’s birthday video to me. You said you were OK when you returned from the hospital yesterday,” Apanpa wrote.
He added: “I am the last one here looking at you. Rest easy king. Your bro Dan is messed up.”
Filmmaker Zack Ineydo recounted the desperate attempt to get Cjay medical attention, saying they took him to three different hospitals in an effort to save his life.
“If anyone had told me September would end with me with you inside the car, running around to three different hospitals, your body lifeless,” Ineydo wrote.
He said Cjay’s elder sister remained beside him, pleading with him to respond as they battled to save his life.
“God Cj, your older sister kept talking to you, and pleading with you to respond to her touch, but your eyes were closed... Journey well, superstar. Journey well in the afterlife,” he added.
Other actors and filmmakers also recalled speaking with Cjay earlier in the day, with some saying he sent them funny videos and appeared to be in good spirits.
The circumstances surrounding the actor’s sudden deterioration in health have not been disclosed by his colleagues or family.
Cjay’s death has left members of the Nigerian film industry mourning, with colleagues describing his final hours as sudden and difficult to comprehend.
