The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday, advised Abuja residents not to vote back into office politicians who failed to perform when they had the opportunity, asserting that President Bola Tinubu’s government is “changing the narrative” through visible projects.
Wike issued the warning while inaugurating the rehabilitation of the Old Keffi Road, a 15-kilometre stretch from Kado Village to Dei-Dei Junction, which he described as another promise fulfilled by President Tinubu.
He explained that the project was initiated in response to the demands of residents and traders in the area, and is part of the emergency infrastructure initiatives approved by the President since 2023.
“This is the first time in history that Abuja will witness this level of development at once, and it is happening under President Tinubu. Those who had opportunities in the past failed. We must not return them to power. This administration is changing the narrative for Nigerians and for the FCT.”
“We gave them a first chance, they failed. We gave them a second chance, they failed again. If we make the mistake of giving them a third chance, they will destroy everything,” Wike stated, receiving applause from residents.
The minister remarked that Abuja had never before experienced such a large-scale rollout of infrastructure simultaneously, adding that 27 project inaugurations were scheduled in the coming days, which he said was unprecedented in the territory’s history.
“This government is working hard to improve the lives of Nigerians and FCT residents. Seeing is believing. You can see the roads, schools and other projects. Do not be deceived by people who come with empty stories,” he cautioned.
Wike highlighted the importance of the Old Keffi Road, calling it essential for local traders and commuters.
The project, managed by Lubrik Construction Company, is intended to enhance transportation and boost local businesses along the route. Wike further instructed the contractors to employ local youths, women, and artisans to provide both direct and indirect employment.
Apart from the road development, the minister disclosed that the FCT administration had commenced the renovation of Government Secondary School, Dei-Dei, and that 73 schools were currently being built across the territory, with more planned.
In her appreciation speech, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, thanked President Tinubu for prioritising people-focused projects and commended Wike for his leadership.
“This road is a lifeline that serves thousands of commuters daily. Its rehabilitation will reduce travel time, improve safety, and drive socio-economic growth across this corridor,” Mahmoud stated.
She gave assurance that the administration would maintain its pace of infrastructure development across the FCT.
