The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), in partnership with La Shipson Pharmaceuticals Ltd, has advanced preparations to begin the local manufacturing of HIV drugs in Nigeria.
This development comes after both entities recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s ability to produce essential, life-saving medicines within the country.
Earlier this week, a delegation from La Shipson, headed by its Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Godiya Shipi, paid a visit to the NBRDA for continued discussions regarding the project.
The delegation also included the company's Board Chairman, Dr Handsome Momoh, along with various partners and investors, all of whom reaffirmed their strong support for the initiative.
As stated by the NBRDA, the project will be hosted within its premises and is intended to bridge the healthcare gap resulting from the decline of international assistance for HIV treatment.
In addition to improving the availability of affordable medication, the partnership is anticipated to generate employment, promote technology transfer, upgrade NBRDA’s laboratory infrastructure, and boost the research and analytical skills of its staff.
Preparations for implementation are already ongoing, with both parties working towards launching the first batch of locally manufactured HIV drugs into the Nigerian market by the first quarter of 2026.
