Debo Ologunagba Explains Why PDP Dissolved Akwa Ibom Executives.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained that its decision to dissolve the party executives in Akwa Ibom State was taken to safeguard its interests and align with national directives.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, made this known during an interview on Politics Today, aired on Channels Television on Thursday.

He claimed that the dissolved executives had lost their independence and were now under the control of Governor Umo Eno, who had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“In Akwa Ibom State, the governor has left. At both the national working committee and party level, there seems to be no distinction between the state executives and their alignment with the All Progressives Congress, APC,” Ologunagba said.

He referred to Section 10, subsection 6 of the PDP Constitution, which prohibits members from associating with other political parties in a way that could harm the organisation.

“No member of the party shall align with other parties or groups to undermine the party or any of its selected governments. Belonging to two parties is an anathema,” he explained.

Ologunagba said the party could not ignore Governor Eno’s declaration that he would “oversee both parties,” calling it “unacceptable and undermining the PDP.”

On Tuesday, the PDP announced the dissolution of its state leadership in Akwa Ibom and subsequently set up a caretaker committee led by Igwa Umoren.

Borono Bassey, who previously served as the state publicity secretary, was appointed as secretary of the committee to handle administrative and communication matters.

This move followed four months after Governor Eno’s defection, which marked the end of the PDP’s long-standing political dominance in Akwa Ibom State.

Once considered a party stronghold, the Akwa Ibom chapter has faced internal turmoil since June, when Eno defected to the APC, becoming the second PDP governor from the South-South to do so in recent months, following Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State.

Ologunagba said that the restructuring was essential to “restore order, reassert control, and prevent further erosion” of the PDP’s presence in the state.
