The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reassured Nigerians that visa and passport operations will not be affected, despite the ongoing partial shutdown of the U.S. government.
In a message posted on its official X account on Wednesday, the embassy stated, “Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information.
“At this time, scheduled passport and visa transit services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits.”
The embassy also noted that, while consular services would continue as planned, its social media channels would not be updated regularly until government funding is resumed. Only “urgent safety and security information” will be shared during this time.
This assurance comes as concerns rise among Nigerians, particularly students and travellers, who fear that the shutdown in Washington could affect visa issuance and travel plans.
Many had expressed worry that any potential delays might impact academic resumption dates, business commitments, or family visits abroad.
The ongoing shutdown, which has resulted in the suspension of several U.S. federal departments and agencies, occurred following a failure by Congress and the President to agree on a budget.
Essential services such as the military, the postal system, and social welfare programmes like Social Security have not been disrupted, although hundreds of thousands of federal employees risk being placed on unpaid leave until a new funding arrangement is finalised.
Government shutdowns in the United States happen when there is a failure by Congress and the President to reach a consensus on appropriations bills necessary to finance government operations.
For Nigerians wishing to receive the latest information about visa and passport services, the embassy advised visiting travel.state.gov, where full details about consular functions, including appointment schedules and processing updates, are provided.
