A group comprising wives of Nigerian soldiers currently in detention has made an appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to grant their husbands a pardon and allow them another opportunity to serve the nation, stating that they should be granted amnesty.
The group, consisting of over 30 women along with their young children, assembled at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
Speaking on behalf of the women, Mrs Rose Emmanuel David disclosed that many of the detained soldiers have been incarcerated for several months, with some spending more than a year at the 7 Division Military Police facility in Maiduguri. She noted that this situation has brought hardship upon their families, compelling many of the wives to engage in menial work to feed their children and afford school fees.
“Our husbands admit their mistakes and are willing to return with renewed loyalty to the Nigerian Army,” she said.
She further appealed, “We are pleading with President Tinubu, the National Assembly, Governor Babagana Zulum, and all Nigerians of goodwill to support our call for mercy.”
The women contended that if amnesty can be granted to repentant Boko Haram members and bandits, then soldiers who once risked their lives in defence of the country should not be abandoned without hope.
“These men once fought for peace and security. Showing them compassion will not only restore their dignity but also strengthen trust between soldiers and the nation they serve,” Mrs David added.
Their plea follows a recent judgement by a Special Court Martial in Maiduguri, which convicted several military personnel, including two senior non-commissioned officers, for offences such as arms trafficking and assisting the enemy.
The women expressed optimism that the spirit of the Independence Day period would encourage forgiveness and result in their husbands being reunited with their families.
