The Federal Ministry of Education has denied claims that it approved a history textbook accused of leaving out Igbo content.
The ministry said the book titled Living History is not approved for use in any Nigerian school.
The clarification was made on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in a statement released by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the ministry, Boriowo Folasade.
She explained that the book was never sent to the National Educational Research and Development Council for review.
The ministry stated that NERDC is the only body allowed by law to assess, review and approve textbooks used in schools based on the national curriculum.
Since Living History was not submitted to NERDC, it was not reviewed, recommended or added to the list of approved history textbooks.
It added that checks with the management of NERDC and a review of officially approved teaching materials confirmed that the book is not recognised for classroom use anywhere in the country.
The ministry advised parents, teachers, school owners and administrators to ignore claims and public debates surrounding the book.
It said such reports are based on wrong information and could mislead the public.
The ministry also warned that the use of textbooks that have not been approved could affect teaching quality and learning outcomes in schools.
It explained that all approved textbooks are written in line with the national curriculum and reflect Nigeria’s diverse culture, shared past and common values, while encouraging unity and fairness.
Folasade urged Nigerians to engage in responsible discussions, avoid spreading false information and always confirm the approval status of school materials through the right channels before using them in classrooms.
She added that members of the public should rely on NERDC for correct information on approved textbooks, noting that proper education depends on truth and mutual understanding.
