The Federal Government has announced a six-week partial closure of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to allow urgent repair work on key bridges along the route.
The affected areas are Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge, where damaged expansion joints will be fixed.
The announcement was made on Thursday, February 6, 2026, by the Federal Ministry of Works.
The ministry explained that the decision followed the need to continue rehabilitation work that had earlier been paused on the Lagos-bound side of Kara Bridge due to heavy traffic caused by the repairs.
Speaking at Kara Bridge, the Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, expressed regret over the inconvenience motorists would face during the period.
He said new traffic control plans would be put in place to reduce delays and allow the repair work to last longer without frequent breakdowns.
Komolafe explained that the expansion joints on the three bridges were badly worn out, creating safety concerns and leading to accidents.
He said the Minister of Works, David Umahi, ordered that the repairs be treated as urgent to prevent further damage and crashes.
He added that repair work had already been completed on part of the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro Bridge and Arepo–Punch Bridge.
According to him, attention would now shift to the remaining sections on the Ibadan-bound side.
The contractor handling the project, CBC Construction Company, said the repair work would last six weeks.
The company noted that equipment would be moved to the site over the weekend, while full construction work would begin on Monday.
The contractor explained that parts of the expansion joints at Magboro Bridge and Arepo–Punch Bridge had already been fixed, while half of the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge had also been completed.
Work was earlier suspended at Kara Bridge to avoid worsening traffic, but approval had now been given to continue.
It was also disclosed that safety materials such as barriers would be installed before traffic is diverted.
Traffic signs, warning lights, and other protective measures would be placed around the work areas to guide motorists and protect road workers.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kehinde Hamzat, assured road users that traffic officers would be on ground to manage movement and reduce congestion during the repair period.
He warned motorists against driving against traffic and said offenders would face penalties.
Hamzat said the repair work became necessary after reports showed that failing expansion joints had caused deep road gaps and accidents, especially around Kara Bridge.
He appealed to motorists to remain calm and patient, noting that the temporary closure was aimed at making the expressway safer for everyone.
