A fire outbreak has reportedly engulfed the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a facility currently undergoing a multibillion-naira renovation.
As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the cause and extent of the fire were still sketchy.
The affected terminal is part of ongoing upgrade works to modernise the airport’s infrastructure.
Emergency responders were reported to have arrived at the scene, although officials had yet to issue a formal statement on the incident.
The development comes nearly two years after a fire incident was recorded at the international wing of the same airport.
On September 6, 2023, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria disclosed that a suspected electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling caused a smoke incident at Terminal 1 of the airport.
According to the authority, the source of the smoke was traced to a burning lithium-ion battery installation in the basement.
Further updates are expected as authorities assess the situation at the old terminal.
