A court in China has sentenced a former justice minister to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of collecting large sums of money through corrupt deals over many years.
The former minister, Tang Yijun, was found guilty by the Xiamen Intermediate People’s Court of taking bribes worth nearly 20 million dollars between 2006 and 2022.
The court said he used the power of the offices he held at different times to help individuals and companies in return for money.
Tang served as China’s justice minister from 2020 to 2023.
He also held other top positions earlier in his career, including governor of Liaoning province and top Communist Party official in Ningbo city.
According to the court, Tang assisted people and businesses with stock market listings, bank loans, land purchases and other official matters after receiving payments.
The total amount traced to him was put at 137 million yuan.
The judges ruled that the scale of the bribery caused serious harm to the country and its citizens.
However, the court said it reduced the punishment slightly because Tang admitted his crimes, showed regret, accepted guilt and worked with investigators after his arrest.
China has continued to push a strong anti-corruption campaign under President Xi Jinping, who has overseen investigations and convictions of many high-ranking officials since taking office in 2012.
Critics have often argued that the campaign also helps remove political opponents.
Tang is not the first former justice minister to face such punishment.
In 2022, Fu Zhenghua, another ex-justice minister, was found guilty of corruption and given a suspended death sentence that was later changed to life in prison.
