Some facilities belonging to the Nigeria Railway Corporation were damaged along the Mile One to Odo Ona rail corridor in Ibadan, Oyo State, following an attack linked to suspected political thugs.
The incident happened on Monday, February 2, 2026, within the railway area in the city.
Items affected include rail tracks, sleepers, signal poles and count boards used for train operations in the area.
The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Railway Corporation in the Western District, Olawale Ayeni, confirmed the incident while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan.
He explained that the matter had already been reported to the corporation’s headquarters for proper action.
Ayeni also disclosed that officers of the Railway Police were informed shortly after the damage was discovered so that security steps could be taken around the affected corridor.
Further findings showed that the group responsible for the damage was allegedly led by an official of a local government in Ibadan.
A witness at the scene said the official claimed the local government had the power to remove structures and facilities on the railway land to make way for commercial projects.
The witness added that the action continued even after the rail tracks and other railway installations were pointed out as property of the Nigeria Railway Corporation.
This reportedly led to tension at the site.
It was also gathered that officers from the Nigerian Railway Police Command tried to stop the operation but were resisted by the group carrying out the exercise.
When contacted for a response, the Information Officer of Ibadan South West Local Government, Kehinde Adediran, said the council chairman was not available to speak on the matter.
She explained that the chairman was engaged in activities marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State and that she had no knowledge of the incident to speak on his behalf.
