The Joint Health Sector Unions has suspended its strike after 84 days, bringing relief to patients and public hospitals across Nigeria.
The decision was confirmed on Friday by the national leadership of the union following a late intervention by the Federal Ministry of Labour on Thursday night.
The strike officially entered its 84th day on February 6, 2026, before the suspension was announced.
The industrial action had shut down activities in government-owned hospitals nationwide.
Many patients were left without care, while others were forced to seek treatment in private health facilities or outside the public health system.
JOHESU represents health workers in areas such as pharmacy, medical laboratory services, and other allied departments.
The union began the strike over the Federal Government’s failure to act on the report of the Technical Committee on the review of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure, which was submitted in 2021.
As the strike dragged on, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress issued a 14-day ultimatum in support of the health workers, warning of wider action if the matter was not addressed.
With the strike now suspended, health workers are expected to return to duty while discussions with the Federal Government continue.
