Nigeria Is Better After Ending Fuel Subsidy Despite Strong Backlash - Tinubu.

President Bola Tinubu has said that Nigeria is now in a stronger position after his government ended the fuel subsidy and allowed the naira’s exchange rate to be determined by the market, even though many Nigerians strongly opposed those changes.

He spoke on Friday at an interfaith breaking of fast event with members of the House of Representatives in Abuja, Abuja, Nigeria, marking a key moment in Ramadan.

Tinubu acknowledged that when his administration made the decision to remove the fuel subsidy and float the naira, many people struggled to see why those steps were necessary.

He said the reaction from critics was intense and emotional, but noted that despite the public outcry, none of the lawmakers at the gathering asked him to reverse the reforms or change direction.

He described this period as very challenging but said the country has now moved past the worst of the struggle.

According to the president, the support he received from the legislature helped him stay focused on his plans during a difficult phase.

He told the lawmakers that working together gave him the confidence to continue with the tough decisions.

Tinubu said he believes Nigeria has now come out of a dark phase in its economic path and is on the road to improvement following the reforms.

Tinubu also hinted that if there were rewards for those who stood by his policies, he feels the lawmakers deserve the chance to return in the next election under their party structures, suggesting a potential second term for his government and its supporters.

The president’s comments come at a time when his economic reforms, including ending fuel subsidies and reforming the foreign exchange system, continue to be central to national debate in Nigeria.
