2027: APC Throws Presidential Ticket Open.

The All Progressives Congress has confirmed that any party member interested in contesting its 2027 presidential ticket will not be blocked, even though President Bola Tinubu has been adopted for a second term.

The Deputy National Organising Secretary of the party, Chidi Duru, explained that while the party may aim for consensus, aspirants who want to test their support are welcome to do so.

He added that incumbents usually have an advantage when seeking re-election if party members are satisfied with their performance.

Duru noted that the “right of first refusal” is linked to how well leaders perform and the need for parties to field candidates aligned with their goals and manifesto.

He said political parties must ensure that candidates can deliver the party’s agenda, as unpopular leaders could risk losing elections.

He also mentioned that the approach applies beyond the presidency, supporting the idea that governors and other executives who have served one term and performed well should be allowed to run again.

Duru said this system keeps parties accountable and encourages leaders to deliver on their mandates.

Regarding concerns that automatic tickets for incumbents could cause disagreement, Duru referred to constitutional provisions allowing second-term bids.

He said party members understand that the law permits re-election, and denying this would be against established rules.

Duru’s remarks come ahead of the APC’s national convention, scheduled to hold in Abuja from March 27 to 28, 2026.

In preparation, the party’s National Working Committee confirmed the existing zoning arrangement for key leadership positions to maintain balance and prevent conflicts.

The current power-sharing plan assigns the National Chairman to Plateau State (North-Central), Deputy National Chairman (North) to Borno State (North-East), and Deputy National Chairman (South) to Enugu State. Other positions, including National Secretary, Treasurer, Organising Secretary, and leaders for women, youth, and persons with disabilities, have been zoned across various states.

Party sources say the zoning plan is meant to ensure unity and stability within the APC as it heads into the 2027 elections.
