Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed speculations that he may defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, declaring his continued loyalty to the party.
Makinde made this known on Monday while addressing PDP stakeholders drawn from the 33 Local Government Areas of the state at the Local Government House Secretariat in Ibadan.
The governor’s clarification comes days after he attended a meeting in Kano hosted by the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The gathering was also attended by former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson.
Makinde assured party members that the PDP remains strong and will actively participate in the 2027 general elections.
“Those saying PDP will die are mistaken. What is certain is that PDP will be on the ballot in 2027, and we will produce candidates for all elective positions from the state to the national level. We will remain in PDP and win,” he said.
The governor called on party leaders and stakeholders to close ranks and resolve internal differences ahead of the elections.
“They want to take Oyo State at all costs, but it is our responsibility to ensure we bend our rules where necessary to accommodate one another,” he said.
Makinde also directed party leaders across the various zones to convene meetings aimed at fostering unity and building consensus.
The governor further announced automatic tickets for members of the National Assembly and first-term members of the Oyo State House of Assembly.
He explained that first-term lawmakers in the state Assembly would receive automatic tickets, while decisions on returning members would consider existing agreements, including rotational arrangements.
“There are places where individuals have chosen not to return, and in some cases, second-term lawmakers may seek a third term. We are preparing for a tough electoral contest, but we are confident of victory,” he said.
Makinde described the coming elections as crucial for the future of democracy.
“This battle is not just about 2027; it is about the future of democracy and future generations. Nothing good comes easy. Success is achieved through struggle. Can we fight through this? Yes. Can we win? Absolutely,” he added.
At the stakeholders’ meeting held at the State Secretariat, Makinde reaffirmed that all aspirants seeking elective positions in 2027 would contest under the PDP.
He added that the party plans to adopt a consensus-based approach in selecting candidates, stressing that unity and internal cohesion remain key to maintaining the PDP’s political dominance in Oyo State.
