Another State Governor Set To Dump Party To Join APC.

The number of APC governors in Nigeria is set to increase from 31 to 32 as Dauda Lawal, the governor of Zamfara State, is set to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fresh reports indicate that leaders of the APC in Abuja have been making moves to bring the governor into their party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The discussions are said to be part of a wider political plan by the ruling party to strengthen its position in Zamfara before the next governorship race.

According to information circulating within political circles, the governor may officially join the APC shortly after the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The possible defection has already sparked reactions among party members in the state and beyond.

Sources within the APC claim that the governor has been promised the party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 election if he joins the ruling party.

The proposed arrangement is also said to include sharing political positions in the state, with the governor taking about 40 percent of elective and appointive roles while the remaining 60 percent would be shared among APC leaders and stakeholders in Zamfara.

A member of the ruling party who is aware of the discussions confirmed that negotiations have been ongoing regarding the governor’s move.

However, the source said not everyone in the APC is happy with the development, as some party members fear that the arrangement could reduce their chances of holding political offices in the state.

Despite the mixed feelings among some APC members, the move is said to have received backing from powerful figures within the party leadership.

Some party insiders believe the ruling party would still win the Zamfara governorship election in 2027 with or without the current governor.

The speculation about the governor’s possible defection is coming at a time when the PDP is facing internal problems at the national level.

The crisis began after the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State in November 2025.

The convention produced Tanimu Turaki as the national chairman of the PDP.

While several PDP governors supported the outcome of the convention, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, rejected the process and raised objections to the leadership that emerged from the gathering.

The situation later moved to court when a high court sitting in Ibadan ruled that the convention was illegal and declared its outcome invalid.

Following the judgment, the PDP approached the Appeal Court to seek a final decision on the matter.

Governor Lawal had earlier told party members and stakeholders during a meeting at the Government House in Gusau that the final court decision would determine his political direction.

According to him, the ruling of the Appeal Court on the leadership of the party would guide his next step.

The spokesperson of the PDP in Zamfara, Haliru Andi, also confirmed that the governor’s future in the party depends on how the legal dispute is resolved.

He explained that as long as the PDP remains a valid political party in the country, the governor would continue to remain in the party.

He also said that members and supporters of the PDP in Zamfara are not currently planning to move to another party, except if the crisis within the party continues without a clear resolution.
