Council Leader Impeached.

Members of the Legislative Council in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State have removed their leader, Ekpo Bassey, after passing a vote of no confidence supported by more than two-thirds of the councillors.

The action was taken during a plenary sitting of the council, and it takes effect immediately.

The lawmakers relied on provisions of Section 33(2)(c) of the Cross River State Local Government Law No. 22 of 2007, which allows the removal of a council leader through a backed resolution.

The councillors based their decision on claims of financial misconduct, poor administration, and failure to follow due process in running the affairs of the council.

In their resolution, they accused the former leader of making unauthorised deductions and misusing about ₦1.08 million meant for the annual legislative votes of the councillors.

They also alleged that ₦180,000 from the March 2026 legislative funds was diverted.

The lawmakers also raised concerns about how the council was being managed.

They said the former leader did not follow the Uniform Standing Orders that guide legislative activities in the state.

He was also accused of choosing members on his own to move and support motions, instead of following proper parliamentary practice.

They further stated that since the 8th Assembly began, no leadership meeting had been held, and that major decisions were taken without involving the necessary committees.

The councillors added that plenary sessions were often postponed for personal reasons, which affected the smooth running of council activities.

After considering the issues, the council members agreed on the vote of no confidence, which led to his removal from office.

Those who signed the resolution include Bassey Ita Archibong, Okon Mbukpa, Oyoyo Ubene, Patric Etim, Margaret Martin, Okon Bassey and Effiom Edem.
