The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has said the cashless payment system at airports across the country will continue.
The Managing Director of the authority, Olubunmi Kuku, spoke with journalists at the airport on Thursday and explained that the policy remains in place as part of a government decision.
She said efforts are already being made to correct the issues travellers experienced during the early stage of the rollout.
According to her, the instruction on the policy came after discussions involving the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Federal Executive Council.
She clarified that the council did not cancel the system but asked the agency to improve how it is being carried out so that airport users can have a smoother experience.
There had been reports earlier that the policy was stopped after the problems that occurred at the airport gates, especially at the aerodrome entrance, where many passengers struggled with the new system.
Kuku, however, said the council only directed the agency to adjust the process before full implementation, not to stop it entirely.
The authority explained that the move toward electronic payments did not start suddenly.
Preparations for the policy began months ago, with awareness efforts aimed at informing airport users about the change from cash transactions to digital payments.
She added that public information campaigns were carried out last year, including messages shared through the National Orientation Agency and other communication platforms.
The FAAN boss explained that the policy was introduced after a directive approved by the Federal Government through the Federal Executive Council.
She said the agency had earlier suggested introducing the system gradually but was later given a timeline to begin implementation.
FAAN also said it initially proposed a transition plan that would allow both cash and electronic payments to operate at the same time while passengers adjusted to the new system.
While restating support for the policy, the agency also appreciated the approach taken by President Bola Tinubu in reviewing how government policies are introduced.
According to the authority, the decision to allow improvements before full rollout shows an effort to ensure the system works properly for airport users.
The agency maintained that it will continue to work on improving the payment process while keeping the cashless policy in place at Nigerian airports.
