Ganduje’s Former Deputy May Join ADC.

Former Kano State deputy governor and 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, is at the centre of growing political tension as reports suggest he may leave the party and align with a new political camp ahead of the 2027 elections.

The situation involves efforts by allies of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stop Gawuna from moving closer to the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, with talks pointing to a possible future move to the African Democratic Congress.

The development has stirred concern within the APC, especially in Kano, where the party fears losing one of its strongest figures.

The issue gained more attention after a group led by a cleric from Gawuna’s area visited Kwankwaso during the Sallah period at his residence in Kano.

This visit has been seen by many party members as a sign of growing ties between both camps, raising fears of a political alliance that could reshape the state’s power structure.

Efforts by top APC members to reach Gawuna have not been successful, as he has reportedly been out of contact for days.

Sources within the party said he travelled to Saudi Arabia for Umrah during Ramadan and later continued on a private trip to a North African country instead of returning home. It was also gathered that he limited communication to avoid pressure from party leaders who want him to remain.

Several party members confirmed they have been unable to speak with him since the reports of his planned exit began to circulate.

The situation has caused unease within the Kano APC, with concerns about the possible impact on the party’s strength in the state.

There are indications that Abba Kabir Yusuf has reached out to President Tinubu over the matter, seeking support to convince Gawuna not to leave the party.

Though details are not fully clear, sources said the president has directed some top figures, including a senator from Zamfara and a senior adviser, to begin talks aimed at keeping him within the APC.

As part of the moves to retain him, the party is said to be considering offering Gawuna a senatorial ticket for Kano Central in the 2027 elections. This is believed to be one of the options being discussed to settle internal issues and prevent his exit.

Political watchers believe Gawuna remains a key figure in Kano politics, with the ability to influence election outcomes.

Some analysts say a partnership between him and Kwankwaso could weaken the APC’s hold on the state, especially given his strong support among young people, religious groups, and business circles.

Despite his performance in the 2023 governorship election, where he secured over 800,000 votes, some party members feel he has not been properly recognised.

There have been complaints that he was sidelined after the election, with others receiving major appointments while he was given a less influential role.
