The National Inland Waterways Authority has dismissed reports claiming that about 150 bandits lost their lives in a boat accident in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The agency’s area manager for the Sokoto Zonal Office, Bello Bala, made this known on Monday while speaking in Sokoto.
He said the story making rounds was not true and described it as false information.
According to him, there was no such incident, adding that the river mentioned in the report is not suitable for navigation.
He urged journalists and media platforms to always confirm their information before sharing it with the public. He also said the agency is always open to providing accurate updates when needed.
Bala explained that the authority has continued to work with communities around rivers, teaching them about safety, proper use of life jackets, and how to stay safe while using waterways.
He added that in a situation like the one reported, local community members and leaders of water users associations would have been aware and raised an alarm.
In the same development, a source from the Nigerian Army, specifically the 8 Division in Sokoto, also confirmed that the report was not true.
The source said soldiers are stationed across the area and no case of a boat accident involving bandits has been reported.
