The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has instructed all political appointees planning to run in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions by March 31, 2026.
The order is part of efforts to follow Nigeria’s Electoral Act and maintain fairness in the upcoming elections.
The instruction was communicated through a circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, and shared by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.
The government called on public office holders to step down if they intend to participate in party primaries or elections, in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The law aims to prevent abuse of office, ensure neutrality in public service, and provide a level field for all election aspirants.
The circular also asks all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to make the directive widely known and ensure compliance.
“Political appointees who intend to contest in the forthcoming elections are required to resign or retire, as applicable, on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026,” the statement partly read.
Similar steps are being taken in other states and at the federal level.
President Bola Tinubu has also asked political appointees interested in the 2027 elections to resign by March 31, 2026, ahead of party primaries.
Niger State has implemented comparable rules to ensure adherence to election laws and maintain public trust in the political process.
