The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has stirred fresh political conversation after suggesting that Nigerians may push for a constitutional amendment to allow President Bola Tinubu to remain in office beyond the current two-term limit.
In a birthday message marking Tinubu’s 74th anniversary, the monarch described him as a decisive leader whose policies have laid a “renewed foundation of hope” for Nigeria.
“Many Nigerians may call for a constitutional review to enable Tinubu to serve more than two terms in office. He is a leader who knows what he is doing,” he stated.
The royal father credited Tinubu’s administration with key economic improvements, including a rise in foreign reserves to over $49.5bn, gains in the naira, and stronger economic indicators. He attributed these to reforms such as exchange rate unification, increased oil production, and growing foreign investment.
Oba Akanbi also praised moves like local government autonomy, increased allocations to states, ongoing road projects, and grassroots palliative distribution.
According to him, past leaders failed to implement similar reforms due to public pressure, but Tinubu has shown “uncommon leadership” by standing firm on tough decisions.
Tinubu, who assumed office on May 29, 2023, recently marked his birthday quietly amid economic challenges. His administration has rolled out major reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and forex unification.m
However, Nigeria’s constitution currently limits presidents to two four-year terms, meaning any extension would require approval from the National Assembly and state legislatures.
