A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) official in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta.
Ariyo, who served in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday due to complications linked to a terminated pregnancy.
Her body was laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road.
Her death comes just weeks after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who also served in the same local government, passed away under unclear circumstances.
Reports indicate that Olalekan, the Local Government Inspector for Abeokuta South, is facing allegations of having a romantic relationship with Ariyo, which allegedly led to the pregnancy and subsequent abortion.
A police source confirmed Olalekan’s arrest and said he is currently held at the state command headquarters in Eleweran.
The source raised concerns over the appropriateness of a relationship between a corps member and an official responsible for supervising her.
Ogun State Police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Ariyo’s death is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department but did not comment on Olalekan’s detention or the allegations.
The NYSC in Ogun State has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
