Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has called on the Igbo to focus on gaining influence in national politics as the 2027 presidential election approaches.
He said the election’s outcome is certain and that the Southeast should work to ensure the region has a meaningful place in the process.
Soludo explained that while he personally supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and believes he has done well, the main priority is the interest of the people of the Southeast.
He pointed out that Tinubu is expected to win regardless of regional support, but the Southeast stands to gain by engaging with the process and securing representation in national decisions.
Recalling past political decisions, Soludo mentioned that in 2011, the party he leads, APGA, chose not to field a presidential candidate but instead adopted then-President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said similar careful and strategic engagement will be needed this time, especially where there is hesitation about supporting Tinubu.
The governor urged the Southeast to pursue politics that build alliances and open doors rather than protests.
He referred to the example of the First and Second Republics, when political bridges were built to protect regional interests.
