Two Tinubu Ministers Resign.

As the March 31 deadline passed, several government appointees resigned to pursue elective positions in the 2027 elections.

The directive required ministers and political appointees to leave office before participating in party primaries, aiming to prevent the misuse of public resources during campaigns.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar resigned to run for the governorship of Bauchi State. During his time in office, Tuggar led efforts in humanitarian evacuations, engaged with international partners, and worked on initiatives supporting Nigerians abroad.

He expressed appreciation for his time in the cabinet and the opportunity to contribute to foreign policy strategies.

The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Sununu, also stepped down to contest the Kebbi State senatorial seat. Sununu previously served in the House of Representatives, where he chaired the Committee on Healthcare Services before joining the cabinet in 2023.

Other political appointees followed suit. Nasiru Gawuna, former deputy governor of Kano State and chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank board, resigned ahead of his plan to join the African Democratic Congress.

Abdulrazak Namdas, a member of the Niger Delta Development Commission representing the North-East Zone, resigned to pursue the Adamawa State governorship. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, Nasir Ja’oji, also left office to seek elective opportunities.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled party primaries from April 23 to May 30, 2026, with submission deadlines for candidates’ names in July and August, depending on the office. Ministers including Adebayo Adelabu, Bosun Tijani, Saidu Alkali, Abubakar Kyari, and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha are reported to be considering various governorship or senatorial contests.
