UK To Deport Failed Asylum Seekers, Criminals To Nigeria.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have agreed on a new arrangement to allow the deportation of failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers, and certain criminal offenders from the UK to Nigeria.

The agreement was finalized during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to the UK, with Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo representing Nigeria and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signing on behalf of Britain.

Under the deal, Nigeria will accept deportees using “UK letters,” alternative identification documents for migrants without valid passports. This step is expected to remove administrative hurdles that have previously delayed deportations.

Around 961 Nigerian failed asylum seekers who have exhausted all appeals, along with 1,110 Nigerian foreign national offenders awaiting removal, are set to be affected by the agreement.

The partnership also includes cooperation to combat immigration fra¥d and criminal networks exploiting visa systems, with plans for joint operations and intelligence sharing between both countries.

Nigeria’s participation reflects its commitment to international obligations, while the UK sees the move as a measure to tackle illegal migration and ensure individuals who break immigration laws are returned.
