A faction of Boko Haram known as Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad has reportedly given the Nigerian government a 72-hour deadline over the fate of 416 people it claims to be holding in Borno State.
The group said the deadline has already started and warned that failure to meet its demands would lead to harm to the captives.
In a video circulated online, a masked speaker said the group is holding women and children and sent a message directed at the government and other authorities.
He claimed the group is acting based on its beliefs and insisted that their demands must be met within the set time.
The speaker also warned that if the government ignores the demand, the group would take action against some of the captives.
He added that any attempt by security forces to rescue the hostages by force would make the situation worse and affect their safety.
The group maintained that its message should be taken seriously and insisted that it would follow through on its warning if there is no response.
In reaction, BOSYA President Sama’ila Ibrahim Kaigama called for urgent attention from top government officials, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, and the National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
He said efforts to reach authorities had not produced any response so far.
Kaigama also appealed for quick government action to prevent loss of lives and ensure the safe release of those being held.
