Burkina Faso’s head of the military, Ibrahim Traoré, who took control of the country in a September 2022 coup, has told citizens to stop expecting democracy.
He described democratic systems as harmful and said they are not suitable for the country.
Traoré made the remarks during a discussion with journalists that was shown on state television.
His statements suggest he plans to stay in power for an extended period, even though his government had initially promised elections in 2024.
When asked about the upcoming elections, Traoré said his government has other priorities.
He referred to Libya as an example, saying attempts to introduce democracy there caused trouble.
Since the coup, Traoré’s administration has dissolved all political parties.
Before the takeover, Burkina Faso had more than 100 registered parties, with 15 holding seats in the parliament after the 2020 general election.
