A house officer working at Central Hospital, Warri in Delta State has died after he was earlier attacked while on duty by people linked to a patient’s relative.
The doctor, Dr. Ogbomade Samson Romani, was confirmed dead in the early hours of yesterday after he collapsed and was rushed into the Intensive Care Unit. He had first fallen ill earlier in the week before his condition became worse.
Reports say the young doctor had been dealing with health problems since February when he was attacked by a group of men believed to have been sent by a relative of a patient. The incident allegedly happened around the hospital environment and lasted several minutes before help arrived.
He suffered serious injuries to his face and stomach during the attack and had been managing recurring illness since then. Despite what happened, no arrest was made in connection with the attack.
Colleagues said he left a meeting earlier this week after feeling unwell and was going back to rest when he collapsed. He was quickly taken to the ICU but did not survive.
Dr. Samson, a graduate of Niger Delta University, was described by his colleagues as hardworking, calm, and dedicated to his job. His death was received with shock by those who worked with him.
He was buried shortly after his passing.
His death comes shortly after another doctor linked to the Niger Delta University community also died within the same week. This has raised fresh concern among health workers about safety in public hospitals.
Medical staff and other concerned groups are now calling on the Delta State Government and relevant authorities to investigate the February attack, ensure those involved are arrested, and improve protection for healthcare workers across hospitals.
