Gunmen Kill Monarch, Five Others In Imo.

Fear and grief have taken over Ochia Autonomous Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State after a deadly attack claimed the lives of six people, including the traditional ruler, Eze Paulinus Ekwueme.

The incident happened on Friday when armed men ambushed the monarch and those travelling with him. Those killed included two of his brothers, his driver, and security aides. After carrying out the attack, the gunmen set the victims’ bodies and the ruler’s official vehicle on fire at the scene.

Eze Ekwueme had only recently returned to the community due to health issues. He had come back to spend time with his people and had attended a meeting with women earlier that day. While leaving the area with his team, they were attacked along Asa Awara Road, where the gunmen opened fire on them.

Footage shared online showed the level of destruction left behind, with the victims burned at the spot where the attack took place. The development has left residents in shock as many struggle to come to terms with the loss.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Garba Bosso, reacted by condemning the attack and describing it as cruel. He said security personnel have been deployed to the area and that special teams are already working to find those behind the incident.

Police spokesperson Okoye Henry said the command received a distress call around 4:30 p.m. on April 10, 2026, reporting the attack on the traditional ruler along Asa Awara Road. Officers were sent to the scene in Assa, where they found the burned remains of the victims.

Security agencies have continued their investigation as efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the killings.
