The Imo State Government has begun plans to honour late Nigerian football legend Henry Nwosu with a state burial scheduled for May 16.
Nwosu died on March 14 at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after a short illness. He was 62 years old. Shortly after his passing, his remains were moved to Owerri, the Imo State capital, where he was from.
The state’s Commissioner for Sports, Obinna Onyeocha, disclosed that the government has been working closely with the family to organise a befitting burial for the former Super Eagles midfielder. He said the process has been ongoing since his death.
He also confirmed that Governor Hope Uzodimma is directly involved in the arrangements, as the state prepares to honour one of its most celebrated sports figures.
Nwosu made history as one of the youngest players to represent Nigeria at the senior level. He was only 16 years old when he played a key role in the country’s victory at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, marking Nigeria’s first win in the tournament.
During his career, he earned about 60 caps for the national team and became known as one of the country’s top midfielders in the 1980s and early 1990s. At club level, he played for teams such as New Nigeria Bank FC and Stationery Stores FC.
He also represented Nigeria in several international competitions, including the football event at the 1988 Summer Olympics, further cementing his place in the country’s football history.
