The Labour Party has announced that its 2026 national convention will hold on April 28 in Umuahia, Abia State, following a series of ward, local government, and state congresses across the country.
The party formally informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the schedule, in line with the Electoral Act, INEC guidelines, and the Constitution.
A letter from the party to INEC detailed the timetable for the internal exercises.
Ward congresses are set for April 23, local government congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25 in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, starting at 12 noon.
The national convention on April 28 will bring together party leaders to elect new national executives.
The letter read, “We write to formally notify the Commission of the approved schedule of activities for the Labour Party’s 2026 elective ward, local government area, and state congresses, as well as the national convention.
“This notification is made pursuant to the provisions of Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, and Section 223(1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which mandate political parties to duly inform the Commission of their congresses, conventions, and meetings."
This announcement follows the party’s earlier postponement of the congresses to allow more members to participate, especially during the ongoing digital membership registration.
The Labour Party had initially scheduled the congresses to start on March 26 but revised the dates to ensure broader participation.
