Nigerian singer Tems has shared her thoughts on love, relationships, and what makes a marriage truly successful.
Tems said she believes marriage should be transformative.
“I feel like marriage is something that makes you a better human being. It shouldn’t be about whether you’re so into this person… It’s about compatibility and whether this relationship helps you evolve. Marriage is a whole other level it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she said, emphasizing that personal growth and resilience are at the heart of lasting partnerships.
She also highlighted the importance of shared values and spirituality. “Anybody I know who has gotten it right, there’s some spirituality involved there. They pray together. There’s something bigger than themselves,” Tems explained, suggesting that a higher purpose or belief system can anchor relationships.
Accountability, she argues, is essential for enduring love. “What’s the reason? Why would you love me if you don’t have anyone you answer to? If you are the god of your life, then why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want,” Tems said. Commitment requires responsibility, and love alone is not enough to sustain a lifelong partnership.
