The Nigerian Navy has rescued three individuals who hid on a merchant vessel in Lagos in an attempt to travel unlawfully to Europe.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the suspects were discovered on board the MSC STELLA (IMO No. 9279988) during a naval operation off the Lagos Fairway Buoy, carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT based on intelligence from the Western Regional Control Centre.
According to Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, the alert was received at about 5:05 p.m. on April 19, prompting a Quick Response Team from Tarkwa Bay to intervene. The team located and rescued the individuals about five nautical miles off the Lagos coast.
Investigations revealed they boarded the ship around 1 a.m. on April 17 while it was docked at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos, with plans to travel illegally to Europe.
The suspects have been identified as Aguru Michael (27) from the Benin Republic, Soye Monday (25) from Ondo State, and Kentobou Peter (22) from Delta State.
