The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian woman, identified as Esther Obasi, after she was seen in social media videos wearing official Ghana Police camouflage and standard black police uniform.
The videos sparked widespread public outrage and raised serious concerns over the illegal use, ab¥se, and impersonation of police uniforms.
According to the police, the arrest was carried out last weekend by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following investigations into the viral content.
Preliminary findings reportedly showed a link between the suspect and a serving police officer, who was also invited for questioning to assist with investigations. The officer later presented the suspect to authorities.
The officer claimed that the uniform seen in the videos was handed over to the woman to wash on his behalf.
The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting police with ongoing investigations into the matter.
The Ghana Police Service has since issued a strong warning to the public against the unauthorised use of police uniforms or any form of impersonation. The service stressed that anyone found guilty of such offences will face prosecution in accordance with the law.
