Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has spoken in support of the federal government’s decision to remove fuel subsidy, saying the policy has brought financial relief and reduced debt levels in his state.

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq explained that before the policy was fully implemented, security chiefs including the National Security Adviser and the Department of State Services informed him that the subsidy removal decision was final and would go ahead without reversal. He said he initially wondered how such a major policy would work in practice, noting that many Nigerians were surprised when it was introduced.

According to him, the decision faced early shock across the country, but over time it has begun to show results in public finance management. He added that Kwara State has recorded about a 40 percent reduction in its debt since the policy took effect.

As chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, he noted that many state governments are now seeing changes in their financial situation, which he linked to improved revenue allocation following the subsidy removal.
