Court Fixes Date For Ruling On Tunde Ayeni’s Bail Application.

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Apo, Abuja, has fixed May 25 for ruling on the bail application filed by former Chairman of the defunct Skye Bank Plc, Tunde Ayeni.

Ayeni is currently in detention over alleged involvement in a ₦15.665bn fraud case.

The former bank chairman was remanded in prison custody on May 4 after pleading not guilty to a 17-count charge bordering on alleged fraud.

Trial judge, Justice Jude Onwuzuruike, had at the previous sitting declined Ayeni’s request to remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) pending determination of his bail application.

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, counsel to the defendant, Dele Adesina (SAN), argued that his client had earlier been granted administrative bail by the EFCC before the remand order was issued.

According to the defence lawyer, the process of perfecting the administrative bail was already underway before the court ordered Ayeni’s remand.

Adesina also argued that the defendant was entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence and stressed that the offences were bailable.

Counsel to the EFCC, G. I. Inde, opposed the application and urged the court to deny the defendant bail.

The prosecution disclosed that it had filed a 23-paragraph counter-affidavit alongside documentary evidence explaining why Ayeni should remain in custody pending trial.

After listening to arguments from both parties, Justice Onwuzuruike adjourned the matter until May 25 for ruling on the bail application
