Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said he supports the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
He made his position known at the party’s convention held in Abuja on Saturday.
Kwankwaso said the zoning plan fits into the party’s long-standing power-sharing practice. He also pointed out that Nigeria has often made progress in the past when leaders from different regions worked together through alliances.
He said the country is passing through difficult times due to poor leadership choices. According to him, many citizens are facing hardship as insecurity continues to spread, leaving many families displaced.
He also noted that economic conditions have become tougher, with rising pressure on households, failing infrastructure, and challenges in education and investment.
He added that Nigeria has experienced similar turning points in history where cooperation between the North and South helped shape major political outcomes.
He mentioned past alliances that played roles in building unity and achieving political milestones in different eras of the country’s development.
Kwankwaso said his support for the zoning arrangement is based on fairness and balance in leadership distribution.
He explained that allowing the South to complete its turn in producing the president would support unity within the country and strengthen trust in the party’s structure.
He also called on members and supporters of the party to stay active and work together as preparations continue toward the 2027 general elections.
During the convention, the party approved the zoning of its presidential ticket to the South for one four-year term.
The motion was moved by Afam Victor Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Constituency in Anambra State at the National Assembly, and it was supported by Seyi Sowunmi, another lawmaker.
The arrangement also states that after the four-year term, the ticket will shift back to the North.
The decision opens the political space for southern aspirants, including former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, who recently joined the party.
