The first group of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic violence has arrived in Lagos.
A total of 268 returnees landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Thursday morning aboard an Air Peace flight. The aircraft touched down at about 10:30 a.m.
The evacuation is part of ongoing efforts to bring Nigerians back home after fresh attacks on foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.
Government officials were on ground to receive the returnees as coordination continues for more Nigerians still stranded in affected areas.
The latest development comes amid rising concerns over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, where repeated xenophobic incidents have continued to trigger diplomatic concern and calls for better protection of foreign residents.
