Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has spoken about his decision to remain silent following the reported passing of fellow actor Alex Ekubo, explaining that the news left him too overwhelmed to express his grief publicly.
In an emotional message shared online, Arukwe revealed that many people questioned why he did not immediately post tributes, photos, or captions after the news broke. He said his silence was not a lack of concern, but rather a reflection of the depth of his emotions at the time.
“I know some people wondered why I didn’t post, why I didn’t say anything, why there were no pictures, no captions, no public display of grief. The truth is, I didn’t know what to say,” he wrote.
Arukwe reflected on his personal connection with Ekubo, recalling their first meeting on a film set hosted by filmmaker Dabby Chimere. He described the late actor as warm, accommodating, and a true gentleman from their very first interaction.
He also noted that conversations with people who knew Ekubo more closely reinforced the importance of character over fame or success, adding that kindness and how people treat others are what truly endure.
“People won’t only remember our talent or our achievements. They will remember our kindness. They will remember how we treated people. They will remember our spirit,” he stated.
Explaining further, Arukwe said grief is not always outwardly visible and does not always require public expression.
“Silence was my first response to the news of your death because grief comes with silence too. Not every goodbye needs a post. Some are carried in prayer. Some are carried in memories. Some are carried in the heart,” he added.
He concluded his tribute by thanking Ekubo for his warmth and grace, praying for his peaceful rest and signing off with a heartfelt farewell in Igbo: “Journey well, ezigbo nwoke.”
