ADC Warns Against One-Party State.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned that Nigeria could be heading towards a one-party state, alleging that opposition parties are facing coordinated efforts to weaken them ahead of the next general election.

The party made the claim on Saturday, June 27, 2026, following a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that set aside its earlier judgment recognising the National Democratic Coalition (NDC).

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the court's decision was part of a wider pattern of legal and administrative actions aimed at shrinking the country's democratic space and weakening opposition parties.

According to the party, the repeated legal disputes involving opposition groups are distracting them from their political activities and limiting Nigerians' ability to choose from credible alternatives during elections.

The ADC also accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of creating an environment that does not support fair political competition, insisting that democracy can only thrive when institutions remain neutral and all political parties are treated equally under the law.

With less than a year to the general election, the party called on the judiciary to protect its independence and avoid actions that could reduce public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process.

The ADC said the courts remain one of the country's strongest democratic institutions and warned that any perception that the judiciary is being used for political purposes could damage constitutional democracy.

The opposition party also appealed to other political parties, civil society organisations, lawyers, labour unions, the media and Nigerians to work together in defending democratic institutions and preserving the country's multi-party system.

It further urged citizens to remain alert against any attempt to silence opposition voices, maintaining that the rights to political participation, freedom of association and the choice of leaders are guaranteed by the Constitution.

The ADC pledged to continue opposing any action it believes threatens Nigeria's multi-party democracy and promised to stand with Nigerians committed to protecting democratic governance.
