Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that individuals opposed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration are sponsoring insecurity across Nigeria in a bid to undermine the country’s democracy.
Akpabio made the claim on Saturday, June 13, 2026, in Abuja during the public presentation of three books in honour of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), as part of activities marking his 84th birthday. One of the books unveiled at the event was the former military leader’s autobiography.
Praising Abdulsalami for his role in restoring democratic governance in Nigeria, Akpabio said the administration of President Tinubu is facing significant challenges from what he described as “enemies of progress” determined to discredit the democratic system.
“I must say that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is grappling with a lot of enemies of progress, of what you left behind. Today, many are sponsoring insecurity in our country to paint our democracy in a bad colour,” Akpabio said.
“But I can tell you that with the determination of men and women in uniform, the enemies we see today, we shall see them no more.”
The Senate President also expressed optimism that the country would overcome terrorism and poverty, attributing future success to the commitment of security agencies and the democratic legacy established by leaders like Abdulsalami.
“You can imagine in a country where a child will stand up to kill the father because of Tramadol and because of all sorts of… I don't know how to put it. But I can tell you, no matter the insecurity we see today, with men like you, the example you have left behind, we will definitely defeat terrorism. We will defeat poverty in this country, and Nigeria will take its rightful place in the global community,” he added.
Akpabio also acknowledged that members of the National Assembly are beneficiaries of the democratic foundation laid by Abdulsalami, assuring the former Head of State that his contributions to national development would remain appreciated.
General Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed office as Nigeria’s Head of State in June 1998 following the death of General Sani Abacha. Less than a year later, he successfully supervised the transition to civilian rule, handing over power to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999, an event that ushered in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
Since leaving office, Abdulsalami has remained active in peacebuilding efforts across Africa and currently serves as Chairman of Nigeria’s National Peace Committee, which promotes peaceful elections and political dialogue.
Akpabio’s remarks come against the backdrop of persistent security challenges in several parts of the country, despite repeated assurances from the Federal Government that progress is being made in tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
States including Benue, Plateau, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno, and parts of the North-Central region have continued to witness deadly attacks by armed groups, while concerns over mass abductions and ransom-related kidnappings remain high among citizens.
