The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a couple following the discovery of the lifeless bodies of their twin infants in a drainage channel in the Okpoko area of Ogbaru Local Government Area on Sunday, June 21.
According to the police, operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Headquarters launched an immediate investigation after receiving reports from residents about the presence of abandoned infants along Cooperative Street in Nwokedi, Okpoko. Officers promptly secured the scene and began collecting evidence.
Preliminary investigations reportedly led to the swift identification and arrest of the biological parents of the infants. The suspects are currently in police custody and are said to be cooperating with investigators as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and abandonment.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident, stressing the importance of child protection and the right of every child to life and care. He assured the public that those responsible would be held accountable under the law.
The police further confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
The Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects or the exact cause of the infants’ deaths, as inquiries continue.
