The Presidency has strongly rejected a call by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi urging President Bola Tinubu to resign, describing the suggestion as “childish” and an “unwarranted distraction".
In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said Obi’s comments misrepresented Nigeria’s political and economic realities and drew flawed comparisons with developments in the United Kingdom.
“The Presidency rejects Obi’s call for President Tinubu’s resignation as childish and an unwarranted distraction,” the statement read. It added that Obi’s analysis “is not only misplaced but also reflects a selective and distorted view of Nigeria’s realities since 2023.”
Responding to Obi’s comparison with the UK, the Presidency stressed that Nigeria operates a presidential system with fixed terms of office, unlike the parliamentary structure in Britain.
“Obi forgets our country does not run a parliamentary system like the UK. We run a presidential system, with the president elected to a fixed four-year term,” the statement said.
The Presidency also pointed to recent electoral victories by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in parts of the country as evidence of continued public support for the administration.
It cited outcomes in Ekiti State and senatorial elections in Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo, and Rivers, describing them as “resounding victories” for the ruling party.
On national security, the government said progress had been made despite persistent challenges.
According to the statement, “hundreds of people have been rescued from captivity,” while “over 15,000 terrorists have been taken off the streets and forests.” It also noted that the military had eliminated several terrorist leaders and expanded the use of technology, including drones, in security operations.
The Presidency defended its economic record, saying key indicators had improved since the administration took office.
It claimed Nigeria had recorded positive GDP growth each quarter, foreign reserves had risen above $50 billion, oil production had increased from below one million barrels per day to around 1.8 million, and federation revenue was projected to exceed ₦30 trillion this year. The statement also pointed to a rise in the stock market from 50,000 to over 250,000 points.
On infrastructure, the government highlighted major road projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, describing them as long-term investments designed to improve connectivity across all geopolitical zones.
The Presidency also said it was constructing durable road infrastructure “that will last 100 years or more” across the country.
The statement noted that nearly two million tertiary students had benefited from the government’s student loan scheme.
On electricity, it said reforms were ongoing under the Electricity Act, with the rollout of prepaid meters aimed at addressing billing challenges. It also referenced a past statement by President Tinubu promising improved electricity supply and accountability in governance.
The Presidency also responded sharply to Obi’s past record as governor of Anambra State, describing his criticism as inconsistent with his own governance experience.
“It is laughable that Obi, who was a colossal failure, unable to secure lives and property in his small state of Anambra, would criticise the current administration,” the statement said.
Addressing concerns over inflation and cost-of-living pressures, the Presidency argued that such challenges were global in nature.
“Any honest politician will agree this is a global problem resulting from tensions in the Middle East,” it stated.
The Presidency dismissed Obi’s resignation call as politically motivated and lacking substance.
“Peter Obi’s call for President Tinubu’s resignation is childish and hollow. It is not accountability; it is political grandstanding,” the statement concluded.
It added that Obi’s comments reflect “self-constructed echo chambers” and a “reality that is largely a figment of his imagination.”
