Suspected bandits have abducted 50 elderly residents of Magamin Diddi village in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State during a peace mission aimed at meeting a wanted gang leader in a forest.
The chairman of Maradun LGA, Bello Dosara, confirmed the incident and said the reconciliation effort was carried out without government approval. He explained that authorities were not aware the community went ahead with the meeting.
According to him, the armed group later released 11 of the abducted elders, while 39 others are still being held.
A local councillor, Bello Husseini, said the bandit leader had earlier requested talks after one of his fighters was killed in a military operation. However, he reportedly turned against the delegation when they arrived and took them hostage.
Husseini also said the group leader is demanding 24 million naira linked to rifles earlier taken from his men.
Community leaders in the area have rejected reconciliation efforts with armed groups, insisting that such moves are unsafe and have not worked in the past.
They called on security agencies to step up operations in Dajin Natsira forest, saying stronger action is needed to restore peace in affected communities across Zamfara State.
