"News PlatformNG" has learned that suspected bandits have set a primary school ablaze in Dekara town, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, despite allegedly collecting a ₦10 million levy from communities in the area after promising not to launch further attacks.
According to residents, the attackers invaded Dekara on Wednesday after emerging from the Kainji Lake National Park and set the Central Primary School, Dekara, on fire.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said communities in the Dekara District recently raised and paid the ₦10 million demanded by the bandits following threats of violence if they failed to comply.
The source explained that the payment was made after the armed group reportedly assured residents they would be allowed to remain in their communities without facing further attacks.
"The bandits imposed a ₦10 million levy on communities in the district. The money was paid because they threatened to attack us if we failed to comply. But despite receiving the money, they still attacked the district headquarters and burnt down the primary school," the resident said.
In a related development, suspected bandits reportedly carried out fresh attacks on Dnakau, Lanta, and Unguwan Kawo communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.
Residents said one person was killed while several others were abducted during the attacks. Among those reportedly affected were Moses Joseph of Unguwan Kawo, who was abducted, and Emma from Bagna community, who sustained gunshot injuries during the raid.
Another resident, identified as Halilu Tanko, was reportedly shot dead during the attack.
