A family of three tragically died after falling from the balcony of their 36th-floor apartment in a luxury building in Elephant and Castle, London. Police are currently investigating the incident as an “unexpected” death.
Metropolitan Police confirmed on Tuesday that the victims are Aditi Vijay Paralkar, 46, her husband Rakesh Narayan Pai, 47, and their nine-year-old son, Sid Pai Paralkar.
Emergency services were called to Churchyard Row at around 07:30 BST on May 27, following reports of people falling from a height. Officers arrived alongside the London Ambulance Service, London’s Air Ambulance, and the London Fire Brigade. Despite paramedics’ attempts to revive them, all three were declared dead at the scene.
The family had lived on the 36th floor of the building. Local MP Neil Coyle suggested that Sid’s serious health conditions may have influenced the events. “It’s a terrible tragedy, a family of three. Just awful. Some constituents saw it happen,” Coyle wrote in a letter to building residents. “The child was born in the UK with severe illnesses, which the police inferred contributed to their horrendous decision.”
Friends of the family, known as Adi and Robin, expressed shock at suggestions that the deaths were a murder-suicide. “None of this makes sense to us,” one friend said. “While it was obvious that Adi was struggling, Robin was the composed one. He was handling things quite well given Sid’s illness and the pressure they were under.” Another noted that caring for Sid had taken a significant toll on Aditi’s mental health.
Neighbours also reported hearing shouting and screaming from the apartment in the weeks leading up to the tragedy.
The couple had previously traveled to India in 2020 seeking treatment for Sid, returning to the UK in 2025 after his condition did not improve. Both parents worked professionally in finance and construction consulting.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said, “Their deaths are currently being treated as unexpected. There were no other reported injuries. Work is underway to formally identify the deceased, and their next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.”
Julian Morris, senior coroner for London Inner South, confirmed the matter has been referred to his office. “The Metropolitan Police are currently conducting their investigation, and we are providing assistance where necessary. The official causes of death will be determined during an inquest, which has not yet been scheduled,” he said.
