Traders and residents around the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos, were thrown into panic on Monday after an improvised explosive device detonated beneath a parked vehicle, leaving one person injured.
The incident triggered fear in the busy commercial area as security operatives quickly moved in to secure the scene and prevent further danger.
Speaking during an inspection of the area, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, said officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit responded immediately after receiving reports of the blast.
According to him, the affected area was cordoned off and carefully searched to determine whether other threats existed.
Early findings from the investigation showed that the explosive device had been hidden beneath the passenger side of a vehicle.
The device reportedly went off shortly after the vehicle's engine was started.
The victim injured in the explosion was taken to a medical facility for treatment and is said to be in stable condition.
Police authorities disclosed that EOD specialists carried out an extensive search around the market and found no additional explosive devices.
Fragments recovered from the blast scene have been sent for forensic examination as investigators work to determine those behind the incident and their motive.
The police commissioner urged Lagos residents not to be alarmed by rumours suggesting the state is facing growing security threats.
He maintained that security agencies remain fully in control and are committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
He also warned criminals and anyone planning unlawful activities that law enforcement agencies would not tolerate threats to public safety.
The traditional head of the Oke Mushin community, Tajudeen Faronbi, explained that he became aware of the suspicious vehicle around 1 a.m. while observing prayers.
After arriving at the location, he noticed that residents were avoiding the vehicle out of fear.
He said he immediately alerted security authorities, leading to the deployment of about 35 police officers to the scene.
More personnel later arrived to strengthen security and ensure residents stayed at a safe distance while investigations were carried out.
Faronbi added that the owner of the vehicle has not yet been identified. According to him, nobody in the area has been able to explain who parked the vehicle at the market or why it was left there before the explosion occurred.
Authorities have continued investigations into the incident as efforts intensify to uncover those responsible and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
